BOOK DESCRIPTION

Stoehr's exhaustive introduction gives historical context to the issues and the colorful characters of the 'Free Love' movement in nineteenth-century America. The bulk of this volume consists of excerpts, each introduced by the author, from rare tracts by and against advocates of variant life styles. Among the proponents are Robert Dale Owen, Thomas and Mary Nichols, Ida Craddock, Sylvester Graham, Victoria Woodhull, and John Humphrey Noyes; most powerful among the adversaries, the censor Anthony Comstock. Numerous illustrations bring us closer to these volatile times of sexual revolution and emancipation, where issues of communalism, women's rights, birth control, and the individual's right to choose a way of life apart from society were raised and discussed.
